Should I do Kegel exercises?
Pelvic floor exercises, also called Kegel exercises, strengthen all the muscles you need to regain control over your bladder. The great thing is, you can do Kegel exercises anywhere, anytime and discreetly -- whether at your desk or on the couch. As with any muscle, the bladder takes a bit of time to get stronger through exercise. When you have moderate urinary incontinence and exercise daily, you can usually expect progress after a few weeks.
What are the causes of stress incontinence in women?
Stress incontinence is one of the most common forms of urinary incontinence and occurs mainly in women. In most cases, stress incontinence is caused by a weakened pelvic floor, which supports the organs of a womans pelvis, the bladder, and the internal reproductive organs. Along with other muscles, the pelvic floor muscles protect your spine and organs from outside pressure. However, when these muscles weaken, it can lead to symptoms like bladder weakness. Common causes are pregnancy, hormonal changes during menopause, and connective tissue weakness. However, stress incontinence is not just a symptom of old age, contrary to popular belief, and also occurs in young women.
What are the causes of urge incontinence in women?
Urge incontinence, a form of urinary incontinence, is a bladder storage disorder and particularly common in women during the perimenopause and menopause. It manifests itself in a very strong bladder pressure, which even the strongest sphincter muscle can't withstand. Urge incontinence often occurs because the receptors in the bladder are not working properly, for example because of bladder infections, bladder stones, a narrowed urethra or a lack of estrogen. The result is that the receptors falsely communicate to the brain that the bladder is full, when in reality it isn't. In some women, urge incontinence can also be psychosomatic, meaning that the cause is mainly mental health related.
